Stretch Fabrics

Spandex, Lycra and Elastane are all brand names given to stretch fabrics used extensively for swimwear and active sportswear.  Small amounts of Spandex are being added to many traditional fabrics to improve fit and comfort, as well as to eliminate puckering and bagging.  Spandex is strong, durable, lightweight and very elastic.

  • Spandex can be stretched more than 500 percent without breaking
  • It is resistant to body oils, perspiration, detergents, sun, sand and salt water
  • Difficult to sew with a straight stitch
  • Easily damaged by heat and hot irons
  • Styles with minimum of seams and topstitching are good choices
