In a world filled with stress, we turn to our homes to make us feel relaxed and happy. Since the majority of us here in the UAE live in a temporary rented space, the challenge is finding affordable solutions to decorate with that help us to stand apart from every other Ikea-ized villa in the city.

Having all moved several times since becoming an expat, we think the easiest way to add color and interest to a space is through the accessories in it.  We never paint our walls anymore, and all of the furniture is basically neutral, leaving a blank canvas to work with no matter where we move!

Using accessories to personally your home might include pillows, lamps, throws, rugs and art to add color, texture and interest to each space. Because of that, you should always have your eyes peeled for something original and affordable in the form of a local market or even more fun, DIY.  We love making our own pillows or covering an old lamp with our fabrics.

Beautiful fabrics don’t have to be reserved for garments and furniture. If you love it, frame it! So if you are looking for a quick and easy DIY this weekend, this is it.

The great thing about this DIY is any fabric design would work, and there are so many to choose from- it just depends on the space you are looking to put it in and your personal taste!

All you need to complete this project is a stapler, some binder clips, good fabric scissors, a frame and of course the fabric of your choice! The amount of fabric depends on the size of frame you choose (back to Ikea!).  Just remember to iron out the fabric before putting it in the frame to avoid any wrinkles.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Choose the amount of fabric you need according to the size of frame you want (always factor in having to fold the fabric around the back of the frame)

2. Using fabric scissors, cut the fabric to size making it a couple of inches wider than the backing of the frame.

3. You will then want to secure the fabric to the backing using clips.

4. Staple the fabric to the backing, making sure not to pull too tight and not to leave it too loose.

5. Fit it into the frame and voila.  Art.

Here are some gorgeous Fabric and more fabrics that would do the job just nicely, thank you very much!
