Yasmine Hammad, is the founder and Creative Director of Salaty and a mother of two beautiful girls. She founded Salaty with sincere passion towards making prayer a beautiful experience, especially for children. Her own children were her true inspiration to the process of designing and producing interactive educational products as well.

Before devoting her work and full attention to Salaty, she worked with Non-Governmental organisations like UNICEF and 1001 Inventions as a consultant. Also, worked in the Egyptian government straight after majoring in Political Science from American University in Cairo.

She hopes that one day, she will be able to see the Aurora Borealis and start a foundation focusing on unfortunate children and further inspire younger generations.

  1. Do you remember the exact moment you fell in love with designing? Or the moment you knew you wanted to make a career of it?

I fell in love with the concept, which developed into real passion of designing and perfecting Salaty’s products. It all started in 2013, when I launched a pilot collection in Sauce boutique during Ramadan.  The sales weren’t impressive but people who received the products kept on asking why did I stop making them.  So finally, in 2016, With much support and encouragement received from family and friends, “Salaty” in Arabic: My Prayer, business was started. I was personally motivated to further develop the concept to inspire more people, especially children, to pray.

  1. Where do you get your inspiration?

The inspiration behind tailoring prayer gowns came to me a few years back.  Always praying in plain cotton prayer gowns, I thought to myself, why is it that when praying to God we are optioned to wear plain ill-fitted gowns while we spend so much time, effort and money to put on our best items and impress when going out with friends. I felt enthused to ‘put on my best’ when praying too, and started experimenting with tailoring a few items.

  1. Do you have a celebrity fashion muse? If so, who and why?   What would you like to see him/her in?

It actually took me a long time to think of one person who could be my fashion muse… and the answer is I strongly believe that every woman is a muse.  Every woman has her own fashion outlook which oozes confidence in her own way and that’s what I admire the most. I feel influenced and empowered by the different styles, color palettes and creativity in how women put outfits together.

  1. How would you describe your personal style versus the style of your brand?

I am in blue jeans, white t-shirt and trainers every day. On very few occasions, I would rock a skirt but with the same combo of white t-shirt and trainers also J

  1. Tell us a bit about your customer. What are they like?

They are mainly young women, children and mothers who believe in our vision which is: looking great and feeling modest and comfortable while praying to God. Wearing something that fits you properly and looks good, adds up beautifully to the experience of praying.

  1. What is the hardest thing about being a designer?

I believe that the hardest thing is trying to please all tastes without compromising your own style. I tend to be a very plain jane person so adding vibrant colors to the designs is done with great caution and admiration for the other women who can rock these colors.

  1. What’s coming up for you? What are you working on?

At the moment, we are developing new educational and interactive products to teach and encourage children to pray. Things like waterproof flashcards that can be used in the shower/bathroom showing children the steps of ablution. In our design, we included animated children faces from all over the world with bright colors. I am a strong believer that learning should be done through fun and playful tools.

  1. Any advice for anyone thinking of going in to fashion design?

My advice for new designers would be

  1. BE CREATIVE AND PASSIONATE: try to find an edge to your concept and designs.
  2. NEVER GIVE UP: even when you have bad days and get demotivated; have faith in God, yourself and your project.
